Acupuncture is awesome at relieving both acute and chronic pain conditions. It is helpful in immediate pain relief and over time can totally minimize the pain from injury or over/under use. If you have pain and you haven't tried acupuncture you are really missing 'the point'!
I love working in the Women's Health arena. It is not normal to have a painful, irregular or crazy long or short periods. I consistently use to have the worst cramps and it was because of acupuncture that I have been able to limit the amount of over the counter medicine I have to take each month--most months I don't have to take anything at all...and this means the world to me! Many women have found that Chinese medicine is helpful for a lot of menstrual disorders. Regular acupuncture offers pain relief and promotes a regular menstrual cycle.
Acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and lifestyle changes affect the nervous system to help regulate the stress response which, when out of balance, might manifests as feelings of anxiousness or depression. I am passionate about helping people to find the balance they need so that they feel better mentally and emotionally. Acupuncture is an amazing adjunct therapy for patients who already work with a therapist, and this team effort culminates in amazing results.
Acupuncture is the main modality of treatment at Luminous Life Acupuncture. However, acupuncture is only one facet of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which is a complete medical system that has been in use for 3,000+ years. It is a powerful medicine that helps both chronic and acute conditions. Palpating, observing and asking questions of the patient are all an integral part of the systematic diagnostic method that Chinese medicine practitioners employ to guide their treatment methods and point selection. Chinese herbs, cupping therapy, gua sha, moxibustion, Shiatsu, and nutritional support can often be combined with acupuncture and are all viable treatment methods within the complete medical system of Chinese Medicine.

It is in applying the resulting heat to specific points or areas on the body when the therapeutic effects take place. The heat generated during moxibustion helps increase circulation, thus promoting healing. Moxa is typically used in conjunction with acupuncture. It is often used in cases of menstrual and digestive disorders and of course is fantastic at helping relieve musculo-skeletal pain. A traditional Chinese saying epitomizes the therapeutic effects of moxibustion. It states: "where there is no movement there is pain. Where there is movement there is no pain ~ or in Chinese Pinyin: "butong ze tong, tong ze butong"

Cupping not only feels amazing but also loosens tight muscles, promotes healthy circulation of blood and body fluids, which increases oxygenation and hydration in the local area. It is great for Muscle pain, swelling, stiffness and weakness. It is also beneficial for respiratory problems like cough and asthma. It is often used at the first signs of a cold. Many pro athletes have recently discovered the benefit of this therapy that has been used by many cultures for thousands of years!

Gua Sha is a technique that is helpful for a variety of problems. It benefits respiratory issues like cough and congestion-(especially at the onset of a cold) digestive problems, headache, and pain. It is a technique that utilizes a special tool to apply unified pressure to the skin. There are many different tools that can be used for this...in school we learned to apply this technique with a porcelain soup spoon-much like the ones you eat with at a Chinese restaurant! It produces Sha which looks like a bruise but is it not a bruise at all! Sha is actually the intended therapeutic result. It helps release metabolic waste from the local area which in turn promotes not only local but also systemic circulation. Research shows that this therapy is great at boosting the immune system resulting in better health overall.

Shiatsu is translated as "finger pressure" and is performed with the patient fully clothed. Practitioners use touch, comfortable pressure and stretching techniques to adjust the body’s physical structure and balance the energy flow. Shiatsu is an ancient healing bodywork that works with internal pathways called meridians that run through the body. It addresses both internal and external imbalances helping the body mind and spirit to return to a state of homeostasis. Shiatsu can be used in the treatment of a wide range of internal disorders, musculo-skeletal, and emotional conditions. It is thought to reduce muscle stiffness, stimulate the skin, aid digestion, and influence the nervous system. It does all of this and it feels AMAZING!

Chinese Herbal medicine is an important tenant of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Herbs have been utilized in Asian cultures for over 4,000 years. Ancient Chinese herbalists often observed and recorded the healing properties of the herbs they studied and became adept at prescribing them for a variety of diseases. Chinese Herbs are proven effective for anything ranging from the common cold to relieving menstrual pain. Knowledge of the healing power of Chinese herbs and herbal remedies has been passed down from generation to generation. At Luminous Life Acupuncture, I prescribe classic and modern formulas usually in easy to take pill form.
